Over可以用作介词、副词和形容词。这里就其介词的用法举例说明。
1.over指“在……上方、上面”,但未触及。比如:They held a large umbrella over her. 他们给她撑起一把大伞。The balcony juts out over the street.阳台伸出在街道上方。
The lamp hung over above the table.那盏灯悬挂在桌子的上方。
2.over指“蒙在……上”,是部分或全部覆盖。比如:He put the newspaper over his face.他用报纸蒙在脸上。He wore an overcoat over his suit.他在西服外面加了一件大衣。She put her hand over her mouth to stop herself from screaming.她用手捂住嘴,以免叫出声来。
3.over指“从一边到……的另一边,穿越” ,尤指先向上然后再向下。比如:They ran over the grass.他们跑过草地。They had a wonderful view over the park.他们放眼望去,把公园美丽的景色尽收眼底。If we can't go over the mountain we must go round it. 如果我们翻越不了这座山,就得绕过它走。
4.over指“从……边缘上掉下”。比如:The car had toppled over the cliff.汽车从山崖上跌落下去了。He didn't dare look over the edge.他不敢从边缘向下看。
5.over指“在……那边”。比如:They live (just)over the street.他们(就)住在街那边。
6.over指“到处,遍及”。比如:Rain is falling all over the country.全国各地都在下雨。They've travelled all over the world.他们游遍了全世界。
7.over指“统治,控制;支配”。比如:He ruled over a large kingdom.他统治一个疆域广大的王国。I don't want anyone over me, telling me what to do.我不愿受任何人的摆布,告诉我该干这干那的。
8.over指“比……多,在……以上”。比如:She stayed in Beijing for over a month. 她在北京斯逗留了一个多月。He's over sixty.他六十多岁了。
9.over指“在……期间,经过(一段时间)”。比如:We'll discuss it over lunch.我们吃午饭时商量此事吧。We're away over the New Year.新年期间我们不在家。
10.over指“利用;通过”。比如:We heard it over the radio.我们从广播中听到的。She wouldn't tell me over the phone.她不肯在电话里告诉我。
11.over指“由于;关于”。比如:We always have an argument over money.我们总是 为了钱的争吵。They have a disagreement over the best way to proceed.他们在如何采用最好的方法上出现的分歧。
